STUDENT RESOURCES.
Here are some resources and tools to help you towards success on your piloting journey!
Training Roadmap
Flight training shouldn't feel like a random collection of lessons.
The Flying with Shawn Private Pilot Training Roadmap lays out the course of training from your first lesson through your checkride so you can see where you are, what you're working toward, and what comes next.
Your training will generally progress through several phases:
PHASE 1: FUNDAMENTALS
Learn to control the airplane and develop the basic habits of a pilot.
Topics include:
Preflight and cockpit procedures
Taxiing
Straight-and-level flight
Climbs and descents
Turns
Aircraft trim
Basic airport operations
Introduction to landings
PHASE 2: AIRCRAFT CONTROL & MANEUVERS
Develop precision and learn to safely operate closer to the edges of the airplane's normal flight envelope.
Topics include:
Slow flight
Power-off stalls
Power-on stalls
Steep turns
Ground reference maneuvers
Emergency procedures
Go-arounds
Takeoff and landing techniques
PHASE 3: PRE-SOLO
Put the pieces together and demonstrate that you can safely operate the airplane without an instructor onboard.
We'll focus heavily on:
Traffic pattern operations
Normal and crosswind takeoffs
Normal and crosswind landings
Go-arounds
Emergency procedures
Aeronautical knowledge
Aeronautical decision making
Consistency and judgment
Once you meet the required standards and endorsements, you'll make one of the biggest milestones in aviation:
Your first solo flight.
PHASE 4 — CROSS-COUNTRY FLYING
Now we expand beyond the local airport environment.
You'll learn:
Cross-country planning
Navigation
Weather analysis
Fuel planning
Diversion
Lost procedures
Flight following
Towered airport operations
Aeronautical decision making away from home
This phase includes your required solo cross-country flying.
PHASE 5 — NIGHT & ADVANCED OPERATIONS
Develop experience operating in different conditions and environments.
Training includes:
Night flying
Night landings
Night cross-country
Instrument reference
Additional emergency procedures
Higher-workload operations
PHASE 6 — CHECKRIDE PREP
The final phase is about bringing everything together.
We'll identify weak areas, sharpen your knowledge, improve consistency, and make sure you can perform to the standards of the Private Pilot Airman Certification Standards (ACS).
This includes:
Mock oral preparation
Mock checkrides
ACS maneuver review
Aircraft systems
Regulations
Weather
Cross-country planning
Risk management
Scenario-based decision making
